I have a lot of sympathy for people who find that TEXFONTS is too broad.  It
really started as a tfm directory path because DEK took no direct interest in
DVI interpreters.  All sorts of thoughtless people, among whom I contritely
include myself, went ahead and misused---yes I now claim it was a gross
misuse---TEXFONTS in a broad way with no consideration of what that might imply
when font resources multiplied.

In a very serious sense, there is nothing but de-facto justification for
TEXFONTS applying to anything but the tfm path.  The specification
of distinct PKFONTS, TFMFONTS, etc. paths certainly helps, and it may
be time to recognize that TEXFONTS was misused by almost all of us
right from the beginning.  (Query---what program in the genuine
WEB suite suggests that TEXFONTS should mean anything but TFM files?)
